Five Alternative Places to Grab a Sandwich in Oxford

Cos we're sick of chains. (That's chain cafes, not um... bondage.)

Review

Sick of Starbucks? All Costa’d out? Want something a little bit different to the same old, same old ham sandwich at lunchtime? Look no further. Itchy has found the best alternative grab and go fast-lunch eat-out stations in Oxford to spice up your lunch break. Whether you’re on your office lunch hour or on a tight sight-seeing schedule, wave goodbye to the plastic sandwich and rubbery cheese: these little gems will not leave you disappointed.

QL Delicatessen 126 High Street, Oxford
If the New Year means healthy lifestyle resolutions for you, then the salad bar at the QL delicatessen on the High Street is an ideal pit stop for a guilt free gourmet feast. So close to the city centre you will wonder why you have never popped in before. WARNING- Itchy found our New Year’s resolutions melting blissfully away in front of the giant choc-chip cookies placed oh so close to that healthy salad.

Café Crème 19 Broad Street, Oxford
Did somebody say roast beef, horseradish and brie on toasted ciabatta? Café Crème takes the concept of sandwiches to the absolute maximum. Paninis, wraps, falafel, baguettes, ciabattas. You name it, they probably make it. NB: These sandwiches are not for the faint hearted.

George & Delila 104 Cowley Road, Oxford
Arguably best known for its incredible ice-cream selection, should you find yourself peckish while wandering up the Cowley Road, George & Delila’s bagels are something to keep in mind. The pizza bagels, all under a fiver, will send your sensible ham sandwich packing. Or if you should pop in for an early ‘brunch break’ (before noon) the egg, bacon, Swiss cheese and chive bagel boasts more filling than Itchy can wave a lunch box at.

Taylors 19/58 High Street, Oxford
The promise of boeuf bourgeon and curry to-go is enough to tempt anyone passing by one of Taylor’s outlets in Oxford. Its winter, right? Go on… it would be a crime not to. As well as these seasonal specials, Taylors also boasts a seriously good range of filled baguettes. With an outlet at either end of Oxford’s high street and more dotted across the rest of the city, we've never found ourselves more than a stone’s throw away from a gourmet take-away.

The Alternative Tuck Shop 24 Holywell Street, Oxford
This ‘very Oxford’ haunt is a great place to drop into conversation that you have visited, and hence offers the benefit of two for one: sightseeing and lunch. With a huge range of fillings on specialist ciabattas- Itchy recommends the sundried tomato- there can be long queues at lunch time, but it is definitely worth the wait. Super speedy staff and tasty cakes at student friendly prices means that Itchy came away with far more than we bargained for AND with change in our pocket!
