Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Go and marvel at all things natural.
Review
The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is located at the
Natural History Museum just a, hop, skip and jump away from South
Kensington tube station. We strongly recommended you head over there if
you have a spare hour.
The breathtaking exhibition hosts a whole selection of categories, including Under 10 (yes, can you believe it?!) Animal Portraiture, and Wildscapes. Itchy was very jealous of the skills showcased. What’s great is that they list the camera, lens, tripod and locations used for each photo... so now we can all go out and do the same, yeah? Maybe not.
The exhibition also hosts some special awards named after famous naturalists and photographers such as, ‘The Gerald Durrell Award for Endangered Species’ where the aim is, to raise awareness of (yup, you guessed it) endangered species. The runner up of this category was our personal favourite… all together now, “AAAWWWWW!” (It was possibly the cutest thing we’ve ever seen. Look.)
What caught our eye the most was the Wildlife Photojournalist Award. The winning exhibit, ‘The Price of Oil’ by Daniel Beltrá, presents 6 images of the 2010 oil disaster of the coast of America, five of which are aerial views of the effect the oil had on the water, as well as the attempts to control and get rid of it. It also features a heart wrenchingly sad image of rescued pelicans with oil soaked feathers. Sob.
Itchy guarantees you will love this exhibition. You don’t have to be a photography snob, just show an interest in wildlife, nature, landscape, travel and most importantly, cute animals. There is even an award for the urban wildlife for you city dwellers!
Your hardest decision will be choosing your favourite photograph; however, some genius at the Natural History Museum has made that easy for you too! Just scan your entrance ticket into their interactive kiosks and you can choose a selection of images to view at home later. We were seriously impressed. (We just wish we could actually take the baby monkey home for keeps…)
Right, no excuses… you still have until March 11 to go and see this fantastic exhibition. Off you go!
