October events in Sheffield

The long days are quickly vanishing as the icy grip of winter approaches. Beer gardens and lazy summer afternoons may be a distant memory and your tan is retreating fast, but worry not, Itchy is here to guide you through the delights to be found inside and out, down Sheffield way this month.

Did you know Sheffield is the comedy capital of the north? Every October the best comedians in the world come and play venues large and small across this fair city. Comedian, radio presenter and Phoenix Nights actor Toby Fosters organises this fiesta of all things funny every year and this one's a corker. Highlights include Dylan Moran, Frankie Boyle, Michael McIntyre, Robin Ince and Jimmy Carr. Upcoming and offbeat comedians are also to be laughed at. Details and booking info can be found at www.sheffieldcomedyfestival.com

We're not all comedians in Sheffield – though most like to think we are. Some of us love nothing more than reading, writing and all things literature-like. Off The Shelf is the annual celebration of all this, culminating in almost a month of events. From poetry reading and writing workshops to talks by writers like Alan Silitoe and Simon Armitage. Go to www.offtheshelf.org.uk for more details.

If Eva Peron was around today she would surely say ”don't cry for me Sheffield... I'm here at the Lyceum in Evita from Monday 13th October to Saturday 25th October and tickets are from £18.50... wasn't Madonna bloody awful as me?“. Book at 0114 249 6000 or www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

If funky music and toe-tapping beats are more your thing, pioneering multi-instrumental experts Hot Chip are in town. Playing at Carling Academy on 28th October, these boys are sure to whet your whistle, over and over like a monkey with a minature symbol.
