The Lamb and Flag
Historic boozer and one time hang–out of the Tolkien/Carroll posse. Thomas Hardy apparently wrote the end of Jude The Obscure, quite possibly the most depressing book in the world ever, while sitting by the fire in the middle room. Perhaps it was the strict no jukebox, fruit machines or fried food rule that got him down? Whatever, this is a lovely old–fashioned pub, with cheap pizzas, live Irish music on Wednesdays, plenty of space and speedy service –I guess that makes up for lard fascism and a lack of Oasis b–sides.
