Castle Tavern
If you squint and ignore the pale pink exterior and rainbow flag, the Castle Tavern feels very much like a traditional public house. The red velvet stools and wooden beams give the main bar a friendly, unpretentious atmosphere, reminiscent of the Queen Vic, but without the snarling cockneys arguing over some insignificant crap - leave it aaahhhhhttt- -. The drinks will test your pockets, but the friendly staff and genial atmosphere more than make up for it. The late night downstairs bar is slightly more modern and funkier, although can feel a little cramped - a bit like Angie's Den then -, and the range of drinks can be limited. Like a straight pub in Oxford, but gay - Kat Slater would be so proud.
