Porter Brook, The

Part of the Hogshead gang, this pleasant pub attracts the usual mix of unemployed slap–heads and lazy–arsed students seeking refuge from real life and John Leslie, info–lite daytime TV. The excessive amount of wooden furniture makes the place look like a bit like a carpenter's workshop but as a result you're always guaranteed to bag yourself a seat. During the week you can try your hand at their difficult quiz but you're not likely to beat the side–parting brigade on the opposite table who've spent their lives reading encyclopaedias and wondering why they've never pulled. The cheap drinks and decent food brings on the multitude at the weekends though, so if they hang around long enough they might find a drunken victim on whom to finally break their duck.
