The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary is a Birmingham institution. Literally. Built to house the criminally insane, it evolved into a theatre before the 5-storey Victorian building became the scene of more intense clubbing than a seal colony. Whether it's indie kids with bad haircuts, gurning ravers or brrrrrrapping hip hoppers, most Brummie 20-somethings will have a Sanctuary story to tell. And quite probably a long-lost coat swallowed up by the cloak room after paying a pound for the privilege. Barfly occupies the basement and hosts bands most nights of the week as well as club nights of wildly varying quality.
