Bristol Academy

Previously the Rock, this is a huge and happenin' place that gets very busy –some serious elbow action is needed to fight for your spot on the dancefloor. Best nights are Thursdays –at last a student night not involving cheese. Saturdays are a bit naff with 80s/90s, plus the occasional Skool Disco if that's what turns you on. The giant stage makes the venue ideal for gigs and there's been some pretty decent names on the bill, including Faithless and Massive Attack. Not especially glam, it's built to entertain the masses, and by the end of the night expect to be bopping in a sea of beer and plastic cups. Pretty strict door policy –with customs–style body searches, which slightly reduces the ratio of desperate townies. If you're bored, blag your way into the VIP room –"I'm writing a review for Venue" works well.
